About the Author
Abinyoh
Digital Safety Hub

I built this playbook after nearly being scammed myself — a professional-sounding call from someone claiming to be my bank's fraud department. I hung up just in time. Then came the fake e-commerce mentor. That's when I realised: if this nearly caught me, it can catch anyone. This playbook exists so it doesn't catch the people you love.

The 5 Golden Rules
These cover 90% of all scams — read them first

1. If it feels urgent — SLOW DOWN

Scammers always create panic. Real banks, governments, and family never demand you decide in minutes. The moment you feel rushed — stop, breathe, call someone you trust.

2. Never send money to someone you haven't met in person

Gift cards, bank transfers, crypto, Western Union — it doesn't matter how they ask. If you've never physically met the person, do not send money under any circumstances.

3. Always verify by calling directly — using YOUR saved number

Bank calls about fraud? Hang up. Find the number on the back of your card and call that. Someone messages claiming to be your child? Call their real saved number.

4. If it sounds too good to be true — it is

Free iPhone. Celebrity giveaways. Jobs paying thousands a week from home. A crypto guru with guaranteed returns. None of these exist. Real opportunities do not arrive in your inbox.

5. Talk to someone before you act

Scammers want you alone and in secret. Before clicking a link, sending money, or sharing personal information — tell a family member or close friend what's happening. Just saying it out loud often breaks the spell.

⭐ Want the complete protection checklist?

The Premium Edition includes a Master Protection Checklist covering every section — 30+ actions that dramatically reduce your risk.

WhatsApp Safety
Scams · Know the warning signs · Key settings
⚠ Scam messageUnknown number: 'Hi Mum, broke my phone, this is my new number. Need $400 urgently. Don't call old number.' — Urgency + unknown number + tells you NOT to verify + asks for money = SCAM
✓ Real messageFrom saved contact: 'Hey Mum, it's me — I'll call you in 10 mins from a friend's phone.' No money request. Offers to call. No pressure to act immediately.

Always call back on a saved number before sending money

No matter how convincing the message, dial the real person's saved number yourself. This one step stops the 'Hi Mum' scam completely.

Never share a 6-digit code you receive by SMS with anyone

WhatsApp will NEVER call and ask for a code. The moment you share it, your account is gone.

Block unknown people from adding you to groups

Go to WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy → Groups → change from 'Everyone' to 'My Contacts'.

📋
How to: Stop strangers adding you to groups
  1. 1
    Open WhatsApp

Find WhatsApp on your phone and tap it to open.

  2. 2
    Go to Settings

Tap the three dots (Android) or 'Settings' tab (iPhone).

  3. 3
    Tap 'Privacy'

Find and tap Privacy from the settings menu.

  4. 4
    Tap 'Groups'

Scroll down until you see Groups and tap it.

  5. 5
    Select 'My Contacts' or 'Nobody'

Strangers can no longer silently add you to scam groups.

⭐ Premium includes all WhatsApp guides

The Premium Edition has complete step-by-step guides for:

  • Turning on WhatsApp 2FA
  • Stopping unknown callers completely
  • Locking your profile photo and status
  • Setting 'Last seen' to protect your activity

Email & SMS Scams
Phishing · Fake invoices · Dangerous links
⚠ Scam emailFrom: support@amaz0n-help.net — 'Your account is SUSPENDED. Click here immediately or it will be deleted in 24 hours.' Fake address. Urgent threat. Spelling error in domain.
✓ Real emailFrom: no-reply@amazon.com — 'We noticed a sign-in from a new device. If this was you, no action needed.' Real domain. No threat. No urgency. No link required.

Check the FULL email address — not just the display name

Tap or hover the sender name to see the full address. 'amazon@support-account-verify.com' is NOT Amazon.

Never click links in emails — go directly to the website yourself

Close the email. Open the app yourself by typing it in your browser. A link can take you to a perfect fake.

Unexpected invoices or receipts are bait

'Thank you for your $299 purchase.' In panic you call the number in the email — that number is the scammer. Check your bank app directly.

SMS from your bank with a link is almost always fake

Real banks send SMS notifications but never include links asking you to log in.

⭐ Premium: Full 7-step Gmail security guide

Your Gmail is the master key to everything — if a scammer gets in, they can reset every other password you own. Premium includes the complete guide.

👥
Social Media Scams
Fake profiles · Romance scams · Giveaways
⚠ Fake profile signsAccount created 2 weeks ago. Very attractive photos. Military officer or engineer 'working abroad.' Avoids video calls. Eventually asks for money or gift cards.
✓ Real profile signsAccount exists for years. Real photos over time. Mutual friends you actually know. Happy to video call without hesitation. Has never asked for money.

Reverse image search profile photos of strangers

Save their photo and go to images.google.com. Upload it. If it appears on many websites with different names, it is stolen. Takes 30 seconds.

Celebrity giveaways are always fake — 100% of the time

No celebrity gives away money by contacting random followers. No real competition requires you to pay to claim a prize.

Check your Facebook privacy settings today

Your public profile may show your birthday, phone, home city, employer, and family members — all used to impersonate you. Set personal information to 'Friends only' or 'Only me.'

Be careful with Marketplace — pay safely

Warning signs: price far below market value, seller insists on bank transfer only, claims to be overseas. Always meet in public, inspect before paying.

📞
Phone Call Scams
Fake banks · Government threats · AI voice clones
⚠ Scam call'This is your bank's fraud department. We detected suspicious activity. To protect your account we need your card number and PIN right now.' Real banks NEVER ask for your PIN.
✓ Real bank call'We're calling about a blocked transaction. We will never ask for your PIN. Please call us back on the number on your card to discuss.' Asks YOU to call back.

Hang up and call back on the official number

Scammers can fake the phone number on your screen. Always hang up and call back using the number on your card or their official website.

The government will never threaten you over the phone

Police do not call demanding payment to avoid arrest. Tax authorities send letters. Immigration doesn't demand gift cards. Hang up immediately.

AI voice clones can sound exactly like your family — create a safe word

AI can clone any voice from just a few seconds of audio. Agree on a secret family safe word now. If a 'family member' cannot say it — hang up.

Never allow remote access to your phone or computer

'Tech support' calls asking you to install an app to fix a virus are scams. That app gives them complete control of your device.

🎭
Deepfakes & AI Scams
Fake videos · Cloned voices · AI-generated content
⚠ Deepfake signsFace looks blurry around edges. Mouth movement doesn't match words. Eyes don't blink naturally. Background flickers. Test: ask them to turn sideways — a deepfake can't respond naturally.
✓ Real video call signsNatural eye blinking. Consistent lighting. Can respond to unexpected questions. Comfortable turning head in any direction. Natural imperfections. Happy to do surprise requests.

Shocking videos of celebrities may be completely fake

Before believing or sharing a shocking video — search the news on BBC, Reuters, or the person's official account. Sharing a deepfake makes you part of the scam.

Real-time video calls can be faked too

Ask them to do something unexpected: wave with a specific hand, hold up a random number of fingers. Deepfakes struggle with spontaneous requests.

Create a family emergency safe word right now

Agree on one secret word only your family knows. If anyone calls claiming to be a family member in an emergency, they must say the safe word. Do this today.

🔑
Strong Passwords
Simple rules · Real examples · Memorable method
⚠ Dangerous passwords123456 · password · yourname1990 · qwerty · iloveyou — These are the most stolen passwords in the world. Hackers try them first, automatically, on millions of accounts.
✓ Strong passwordsMyDogLovesMondays2024! · Coffee&Sunrise#7 · PurpleElephant!Rain99 — Long. Mix of words, numbers, symbols. Not your personal info. Easy to remember, hard to crack.

Rule 1 — Make it at least 12 characters long

'MySonBorn2010!' is much stronger than 'M@rk10' — and easier to remember.

Rule 2 — Mix letters, numbers, and symbols

'sunshine' is weak. 'Sunshine#2024!' is strong. Even this small change makes it dramatically harder to crack.

Rule 3 — Never use the same password twice

If one website gets hacked, criminals test that password on your bank and email automatically.

⭐ Premium: Full password system + password manager guide

Includes a complete step-by-step method for building memorable strong passwords, a guide to free password managers, and how to check if your email was already stolen.

Secure Your Accounts
Two-step verification for Gmail · WhatsApp · Facebook
ℹ What is 2FA?A second lock on your account. Even if a scammer steals your password, they still cannot get in without a code sent to your phone. Think of it as a deadbolt on top of your regular door lock. Takes 5 minutes.

Turn on 2FA for Gmail — do this today

Your Gmail is the master key to all your other accounts — protect it first.

Turn on 2FA for WhatsApp

Settings → Account → Two-step verification → Enable.

Turn on Facebook two-factor authentication

Facebook → Menu → Settings & Privacy → Settings → Security and Login → Use two-factor authentication.

Review which apps have access to your Google or Facebook account

Remove anything you don't recognise. Each unknown connection is a potential backdoor.

Check logged-in devices on all accounts

If you see a device or location you don't recognise — remove it immediately and change your password.

📶
Public Wi-Fi Safety
Malls · Cafes · Airports · Hotels
⚠ Dangerous situationNetwork name: 'Free_Mall_WiFi' or 'Starbucks_Guest' — no password, connects immediately. Scammers create fake hotspots with familiar names. Everything you do can be intercepted.
✓ Safe practiceOfficial network shown on a sign or receipt. Has a login page or password from staff. Confirm exact network name with a staff member. Never guess or pick from a list.

Never open your banking app on public Wi-Fi

If you need to check your bank while out, turn off Wi-Fi and use your mobile data instead.

Confirm the exact Wi-Fi name with a staff member

Ask: 'What is the exact name of your Wi-Fi?' Scammers create hotspots named 'Starbucks Free WiFi' — identical to the real one.

Turn off Wi-Fi and forget the network when you leave

Your phone reconnects automatically to saved networks — a scammer can recreate them. Tap the network and select 'Forget this network.'

⭐ Premium: Private DNS setup guide

Includes step-by-step guides for setting up Private DNS (dns.google) on Android and Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for iPhone — encrypts your browsing even on public Wi-Fi.

Apps & Phone Updates
Why updates matter · What to avoid · Key rules
ℹ Why updates matterEvery update fixes security holes scammers use to break into phones. Running an old version is like leaving your front door unlocked. Updates are free and automatic.

Only install apps from the official app store

Never install an app sent to you as a file via WhatsApp, email, or any website.

Check what permissions your apps are asking for

A flashlight app does not need your contacts. A game does not need your location. Go to Settings → Privacy to review.

Update your phone's operating system — not just apps

Settings → General → Software Update (iPhone) or Settings → System → System Update (Android).

⭐ Premium: Full app update guide + how to remove unused apps

Step-by-step guides for updating every app, removing unused ones that may be collecting your data, and checking app permissions — with screen-by-screen instructions for both iPhone and Android.

I Was Scammed — Do This Now
Your 60-minute action plan. Stay calm. Act fast.
ℹ RememberYou are not stupid. These are professional criminals who deceive millions of smart, careful people every single day. What matters now is the next 60 minutes.
1

Stop all contact with the scammer immediately

Block their number, email, and social media. Do not try to get your money back through them — they will only scam you further.

2

Call your bank right now — number on the back of your card

Tell them you've been scammed. Ask to freeze or reverse the transfer. Banks can sometimes stop payments if contacted quickly enough.

3

Change your passwords — starting with your email

Email first, then bank app, then social media. Change from a device the scammer has never touched.

4

Check if your accounts are still yours

Log in and check for unfamiliar messages sent, login locations, or changed settings.

5

Tell a family member or trusted friend right now

Do not hide this out of shame. Scammers rely on victims staying silent.

6

Report it — keep all evidence

UAE: ecrime.ae or call 992 · UK: Action Fraud 0300 123 2040 · US: reportfraud.ftc.gov · AUS: scamwatch.gov.au

7

Watch out for 'recovery scams'

Someone may contact you claiming they can recover your money for a fee. This is a SECOND scam. Ignore and report them.

You are already doing the right thing by learning how to protect yourself. Share this playbook with everyone you love.
