Is That Dating App Match Actually a Person?

Short answer: not necessarily, and a real, confirmed case shows exactly how far this has gone.

What was actually found

A network of more than 20 dating apps, all advertised as fully human, was found to be running AI-generated personas for the large majority of matches. Over a single two-week stretch, more than 4,700 AI personas exchanged roughly 2.36 million messages with around 25,000 real people. Of everyone in the match pool, about 75% were AI personas and only 25% were real, meaning a real user was three times more likely to be talking to a bot than to another person.

The apps limited how much you could message before you had to buy virtual coins to continue. Every exchange with an AI persona was another opportunity to sell more coins, the AI never got tired, never lost interest, and never stopped replying.

How the apps avoided getting caught

The apps were built to behave differently during app store review than they did for real users, showing reviewers a version without the paid messaging limits so it would pass inspection. Payments were also routed through an in-app browser that could be switched to third-party processors remotely, again hidden specifically during review.

How to protect yourself

Ask for a video call early, an AI persona will always have an excuse to avoid one. Be suspicious of any dating app that caps how much you can talk to a match unless you pay for more, that business model rewards endless engagement over an actual connection. And notice if a "match" replies instantly, at all hours, and never seems to run out of things to say, that consistency is a pattern real people rarely match.
