Short answer: probably not. This is one of the fastest-growing scams targeting seniors, and AI voice cloning just made it far harder to catch by ear alone.
The call usually comes late at night or early in the morning, when you're least likely to think clearly. A panicked voice claims to be your grandchild, saying they've been in a car accident, arrested, or stuck in another country and need money right now. They beg you not to tell their parents, because they're "embarrassed." Sometimes a second caller gets on the line claiming to be a lawyer, bail bondsman, or police officer to make it feel official.
The request always comes down to the same thing: send money immediately, and do it in a way that can't be traced or reversed, wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. That urgency and secrecy is the entire scam. It's designed to stop you from pausing to check.
It used to be that a stranger's voice on the phone was an easy tell. That's changed. Scammers can now clone a real voice from just a few seconds of audio pulled from a social media video, and use it to make the call sound exactly like your grandchild, tone, accent, and all. Adults 60 and older lost $7.748 billion to fraud in 2025 alone, up 59% from the year before, according to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. Of that, $352 million involved AI as a tool, like voice cloning. On average, each victim lost about $38,500.
Hang up. Then call your grandchild back yourself, using a number you already have saved, never one the caller gives you. If you can't reach them right away, call another family member to check. A real emergency can wait the five minutes it takes to verify, a scammer's whole plan depends on you not taking that time.
It also helps to agree on a family safe word in advance, a phrase only your real family would know, to use in any genuine emergency call. And no matter how convincing the story sounds, never send money through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency based on a phone call alone.
