How Do I Know If a Bank Call Is Really My Bank?

Short answer: real banks never ask for your PIN over the phone. If a caller does, hang up and call the number on the back of your card yourself.

The trick behind almost every fake call

Scammers can fake the number that shows up on your screen, a trick called number spoofing, so seeing your bank's real name and number pop up proves nothing on its own. A caller claiming to be your bank's fraud department, sounding urgent and asking for your card number and PIN "to protect your account," is one of the most common versions of this.

Hang up and call back on the official number, on your card, on the bank's website, or on a previous statement. Never the number the caller gave you.

Government threats work the same way

Police don't call demanding payment to avoid arrest. Tax authorities send letters, not threatening phone calls. Immigration services don't demand gift cards. Any call using fear and urgency to push you toward immediate payment is following the same playbook, regardless of who they claim to be. This particular version disproportionately targets elderly people and immigrants.

The newest version: a voice that sounds like family

AI can now clone a voice from just a few seconds of audio. A call that sounds exactly like your child or spouse, saying they're in danger and need money urgently, is no longer proof of anything. Agree on a family safe word now, before you ever need it. If the person on the phone can't say it, hang up and call them back directly.

The rule that covers all of it

Never allow remote access to your phone or computer because someone called and asked. A "tech support" call asking you to install an app so they can "fix a virus" hands them full control, they can watch your banking app and move money while you're still on the line. Legitimate tech support never calls you first.
