How to Stop Strangers Adding You to WhatsApp Groups

Short answer: change one setting. Choose "My contacts" for groups, and strangers can no longer drop you into their groups.

Why scammers add you to groups

Out of nowhere, you find yourself in a group promising investment tips, crypto signals, easy part-time jobs, or giveaways. Other members cheer, post screenshots of their "profits", and thank the admin. Many of them are fake accounts run by the same people. The goal is to make it look real enough that you pay, click a link, or move to a private chat.

By default, WhatsApp lets anyone who has your number add you to a group. You can change that in under a minute.

The setting that stops it

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Go to Settings. On Android, tap the three dots at the top right, then Settings. On iPhone, tap Settings at the bottom.
  3. Tap Privacy. On some older versions, tap Account first, then Privacy.
  4. Tap Groups.
  5. Choose "My contacts". Or choose "My contacts except" if there are also saved contacts you don't want adding you.

With "My contacts" turned on, a stranger can no longer add you directly. The most they can do is send you an invite, and you can simply ignore it.

What happens after you change it

If someone who isn't allowed tries to add you, WhatsApp asks them to send you a private invite in a normal chat instead. You decide whether to join. If you do nothing, the invite expires after three days.

If a scam group already added you

  1. Don't click any links or reply to anyone in the group.
  2. Report and leave. Open the group, tap the group name at the top, scroll down, and tap Report group and Exit group.
  3. Block the person who added you if they message you directly.
  4. Newer versions of WhatsApp may also show a short safety summary when someone you don't know adds you, with an option to leave without opening the chat. If you see it, use it.

Three more settings worth turning on

  1. Two-step verification: Settings, Account, Two-step verification. It adds a PIN so nobody can take over your WhatsApp with a stolen code.
  2. Silence unknown callers: Settings, Privacy, Calls. Calls from numbers you haven't saved go straight to silent.
  3. Hide your details from strangers: Settings, Privacy. Set your profile photo, last seen, and about to My contacts.

Share this with your family. It takes a minute to set up and saves a lot of trouble.
